About me...

 I am a native of Rochester NY, born and raised. Currently, I live in Charlotte NY, up by Lake Ontario. I am a 1st grade teacher in the City School District, and I love my job and students. Pursuing the M.Ed. will help me continue my goal to remain a full time teacher. Over the winter break, I was able to go snowboarding, which I have a huge passion for but was not able to do last winter. In addition, I love to sing and play drums. Thank you!

  Social media continues to charge forward every day as a significant pastime for people, especially adolescents. With it, kids can communicate with friends, indulge in their passions and interests, and be introduced to old and new experiences. Blog For Week #8

 The topic I chose to examine is playlists. Whether through Apple Music, Spotify, or any of the other platforms available, it seems as if virtually everyone has their own musical playlists for their lives; some people have multiple different playlists they access based on the daily activities they are involved in (work playlist, exercise playlist), or what emotions they are experiencing at a given moment (happy playlists, angry playlists). A person’s music collection acts as an expressive soundtrack to their life, revealing so much about them.   I view this as a new literacy, as playlists can be an opportunity for someone to learn about others and themselves. My goal is to create an engaging and effective way for students to reveal who they are and learn more about the music they listen to and love. New Literacies: Final Reflection

  So much goes into educating children. They need to feel engaged, comfortable, and confident if learning is to take place. Although different elements change throughout time, these three fundamentals remain the same. Technology has changed so much in such a short amount of time, that many components of it are quickly being adopted as new literacies—several of which are proving to be profoundly successful. It takes effort, diligence, and vigilance on an educator’s part to determine what will work and what will not. This course has really opened my eyes to how many ways students can be reached through technology and media just as effectively—if not more so—than textbooks and standardized curriculum.   Peppler & Glosson (2013) state “that the tools we use and make available play a formidable role in shaping our conceptual understandings and moreover that new tools can bring clarity to concepts that are often challenging” (pg. 148).
